Alimony isn’t a consideration in all divorces, but when there is a reason to think that it will be a point in a case, it is imperative that both sides learn what might come into the picture. It is important to remember that men and women can both be awarded spousal support. With the increase in the number of stay-at-home dads, it is possible that man who stays home with the children might receive alimony during the divorce to help him get on his feet while he works to enter the workforce again.

If you think that your case is going to include alimony, you need to look into some of the specifics about it. For example, alimony payments will usually stop when the recipient has a significant other move into the home or when they get married. This could mean that you will have to make a decision between continued financial support and a live-in boyfriend or girlfriend.

In some instances, there is a predetermined expiration of alimony. When this is the case, you will have a limited amount of time to work out your finances. It is also possible that alimony will be in the form of a lump sum payment. In this case, you would need to budget to make the money last.
