What kind of custody works for infants?

From the time your child is born, you want to do all you can to protect them. Your spouse feels the same. Sadly, you both know that your relationship isn't going the way you'd planned.

Despite that, you both want to do what's best for your child, but you know that they won't get much say. They're only an infant, so what should you do?

Parents with infants have more to worry about

Parents who have infants may need to be cautious about how they share custody. For instance, while your husband may want to have custody a day or two at a time, the reality might be that it's impossible because of the inability to produce and preserve days' worth of breast milk, for example.

Similarly, babies are often bonded more closely with their mothers, so being apart for many days could be harmful to that relationship. However, fathers still need to play a role in their children's lives, so how can you allow that while providing your child's needs?

One good option is to allow daily visits during certain hours. Another would be to provide bottles for a day or two or rely on formula over a weekend or during an overnight stay. Every baby is different, so you and your spouse should talk about what your child's needs are and how to meet them when sharing custody. Once you know what you want to do, your attorneys can help you create a custody plan for your child's immediate future. You can always change it and revisit it later.
