Can you save extended family relationships after divorce?

You have a close-knit family, but you know that your marriage isn't what it used to be. You and your husband fight all the time, and although your parents and relatives don't really see it, you both feel miserable.

While you want to stay connected with the extended family that you've come to love, you know that you may lose that connection if you divorce. What should you do? That's your call, but you should keep in mind that putting some distance between yourself and your ex-spouse's family will likely need to happen during or following a divorce.

Divorces change relationships and not just yours as a couple

People who see that their loved ones are divorcing may find it hard to cope. They may be unsure how to interact with the estranged spouse of their direct family member. For this reason, you may find that some people who once wanted to see you often or who were interested in befriending you start to put a distance between you. They may even lash out.

Try not to take this to heart. At the end of the day, your spouse's family will generally side with them because they've always been together. That doesn't mean that those relationships won't heal in the future, but it does mean that they might need to go on hold for now.

Divorces can make you feel like you've lost everything, but time does help heal. Your attorney will help you focus on dividing your assets and working toward a fair resolution, so you can move on.
