Flexibility is the key for stressless holidays with kids

Parenting plans are an important part of any divorce with children. They are there to prevent kids from getting hurt and to make sure they're always with one of their parents or an approved guardian.

This holiday season, it's important to remember that sharing your time might be necessary. Whether it's Christmas Day, a birthday, New Year's Eve or another holiday, you and your ex-spouse are going to have to figure out how to share time with your child fairly.

It isn't always easy to create a parenting plan, and there are few parents who would freely admit that their parenting plan is perfect. However, many people do have good parenting plans with room for changes when necessary.

Being flexible is essential. For example, if your child has the flu on Christmas Day, it might be better not to take them to the other parent's house and to rearrange the festivities. Similarly, a parent who truly wants to spend time with their child that day (but who doesn't have custody) might be able to share some time with them despite that if the other parent agrees.

When you're coming up with how your parenting plan should work, you should consider how you'd want to be treated. Try to be fair and flexible within reason because life is too short to continuously argue or fight over custody. Working together is a good way to make sure you both have the time you want and need with your growing child, so they can be raised with both parents happily in their lives.
