1 killed in DUI crash involving allegedly impaired driver

Many people are fortunate enough to survive collisions. For those who don't, it's important for their families and loved ones to get the closure they need. For some, that means holding the responsible party accountable for financial losses. For others, it means filing a wrongful death claim.

Every case is different, but they're all tragic. Earlier this month, a 22-year-old man was arrested for hitting a bicyclist in Tampa and leaving the scene. The driver was traveling in a Jeep Wrangler when he hit a cyclist who was riding on the shoulder. That cyclist died from his injuries.

Authorities say the driver did not call 911, but he did return to the scene around 50 minutes after the crash. He turned himself in to the officers there.

Officers reported that the man smelled of alcohol and had signs of impairment. A breath test was given, and it showed that the man's blood alcohol level was .08%. By using a drug recognition exam, the authorities also believed they could prove that he was impaired. The man faces charges for leaving the scene of a fatal crash as well as DUI.

A crash like this is sad because someone lost his life. However, it's also sad that family members will need to pay for a funeral and other unexpected expenses.

If you lose a loved one this way, remember that you may be able to file a claim against the dangerous, reckless or negligent driver. An experienced attorney can help you determine what options for seeking compensation for economic as well as non-economic damages.
