Here are 3 tips for handling homeowner's association disputes

If your homeowner's association (HOA) has a problem with something you've done on your property, you could be engaged in a heavy dispute. The good news is that there are ways for you to handle the dispute and to move on.

Winning a fight against your HOA isn't always easy, but with a few tips, you may have a better chance. Here are a few things to consider.

1. You need an attorney

The first thing to keep in mind is that it's a good idea to bring your attorney on board as early as you can. Your attorney is a keen negotiator and that means you can work hard to keep this dispute from becoming a lawsuit. If it does come to it, your attorney can also represent you in court.

2. Know the rules of the HOA

The next thing to remember is that you should know the rules of the homeowner's association well before you go to bat against it. If you're being accused of violating a rule that you don't see in writing, then you should ask for clarification. Being pleasant will go a long way toward resolving a dispute without vitriol, so do your best to keep a cool head.

3. Keep a paper trail

Anything you do should be in writing. Document everything, so that you don't have to worry about remembering who said what if you have to go to court.

These are just three tips. If you find that you're struggling, your attorney can give you more advice on what to do next.
