How can your family talk about estate planning?

It's hard to talk to your loved ones about your estate because doing so means that you have to bring up your eventual death. You know that it's going to happen, and they do, too. The problem is that no one wants to talk about it or think about it.

The problem is that you need to talk to your family about what you want to see happen with your estate. It's a depressing topic, but you want to explain yourself now so that they understand what's to come. What should you do?

Talking about estate planning with your family

To make talking about estate planning easier, you may want to start by setting up a date to have your attorney speak with you and your family in person and in office. This makes things a little more official, which means that most people won't be able to avoid talking about something that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Once you have everyone meet with your attorney as a group, your attorney can go over some of the basic goals you have with your estate plan. You may want to talk about your will or even get input from your family to decide how you want to divide your assets.

It's possible to make this a positive discussion without having to upset anyone. You never know what will happen in life, so it's important to put plans in place now. Having a meeting now, and possibly again in the future, can help your family see your intentions and know that when the worst does come to pass, they will have less to worry about.
